OHISASHIBURI

a lovestruck romeo, sings the streets a serenade
Since my last post I have:

* Experienced Thanksgiving, with turkey and many pies
* Driven on the right side of the road without killing anyone
* Bought a pair of 5" Jeffrey Campbell boots(1)
* Got lost in a place called "Hunting Valley", in mist, at night
* Visited the Shedd Aquarium with Kris <333 Thanks for driving a million miles to flop around the aquarium with me!
* Failed to meet up with Cathy :( I will return to Chicago for this
* Survived a week spent entirely with other consultants
* Spend said week gatecrashing other depts' social events for free booze
* Survived a surreal, Wong Kar Wai movie-like series of non-incidents(2)
* Been in the air for almost 50 hours (not all at once)
* Drawn what feels like several square miles of whale shark
* Put a book together in Illustrator

After I got back Y offered to take me along to Milan on the 17th (he's going for work) since he had a bunch of air miles expiring soon and didn't want to waste them (also, I hope, for the joy of my company). My first reaction was ABSOLUTELY NOT IT'S CF WEEKEND. Five minutes later I was all, did you say free trip to Milan

(I am clearly working in the wrong dept i.e. the one with no business trips to European fashion capitals)

So. I'm back in the tropics now and it is 8 days to Comic Fiesta and counting! My books will be ready next Friday night!! The printing company is full of angels!!! I will be sharing a booth with KC and Amei and Wrats!!!!! hopefully I will not pass out from excitement and not too many people will be scared away and I will get to meet new friends!!!!!! And I should go easy on the exclamation marks, and look up what number our booth is. Yes. I will make a proper information post after work. I came back to SO MUCH WORK it's not funny

The Basara story is still wip 6/12 :D; I will probably just print it myself last minute as a mini-comic or.. put it online... Also while I managed to explain the ocean book to the printing company with lots of vague handwaving, I do not know how to even begin explaining the concept of Basara, let alone "modern-day sengokujidai AU in which Ishida Mitsunari is an angry schoolgirl"

Kanji fail

"For halloween we will be our heroes".. Does not include disapproving Mouri who is all trick, no treat

OSSAN PARTY, FAVORITE ENDING OF ALL ENDINGS except possibly the one where Kurokan and Ujimasa make friends

~Only love will set you free... Only love~

I COULD WRITE AN ESSAY ABOUT THIS RELATIONSHIP AND HOW SAD IT IS EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS TO BE A GOOD THING, mostly because it involves tragic okra death and lonely pirate pining forever and bewildered triangle ~learning how to love~

Ok back to work. It is my first week back and I am already feeling like someone who defuses bombs for a living. A KANCHEONG SPIDER

1) Actually this was a good strategy; the avalanche of guilt I got off this splurge prevented me from spending any more money for the rest of the trip

2) So surreally WKW-ish it is deserving of its own post, although the fact that I immediately thought to write about it as a story right after it went down is very illustrative of how "people who write about their friends may end up with no friends"

Thank you, tho it is really the BASARA character designs/stories that are so beautiful ;;

If you ever sell it online, please let us know! I'd love to buy a copy. ♥

There's something about your drawings that give the design/stories a particular quality though. ;o; I just love looking at them.

Yess I spent half an hour getting lost then half an hour chatting with the owners of the print shop xD they were super nice

Sadly this also made me realize I cannot find my way beyond a 5km radius of my house ;___;

SEE YOU AT CF :D :D :D and thanks for the welcome back haha. It's so nice and warmmm

i love all your art :o

WHAT IS BASARA.

also i really like how the last one looks like ink wash even though it's digital!? :D

Dec. 10th, 2010 10:05 pm (UTC)
THIS IS BASARA

Sorry kneejerk response. Er it's a Dynasty-Warriors like game very loosely based on er prominent daimyos involved in Japan's 1500ish civil war period. That clip was from the subsequent anime series. But he really speaks badass Engrish in game. It's... special

The last one is all one brush with slightly different settings. I should make a post about this brush one day it's the only good thing that ever came out of CS4!!

Your last picture is so awesome and tender.*_* Dunno much about the pairing tho. I shipped Aniki/Mori when I was in the fandom, but I dunno much about the short haired guy in his lap?XD Is he a new character?
tongari
Dec. 10th, 2010 10:13 pm (UTC)
The triangle-haired guy is Ishida Mitsunari! He actually has his own boyfriend haha, I just really liked aniki's interaction with him ;_;

Aniki and Mouri are united forever in my heart, unfortunately the third game was rather mean to my heart and they are quite harsh to each other in all their stories..

asdjkl;'; uhm, for people who may not be able to make it to CF...
will it be possible to purchase your book with shipping for local postage? @__@;;;
*sobs* if this is impossible, I will have to look into paying the rm60 or so necessary to cross state lines.. aaaaaaaah.. although the awe of meeting you and amei and wredwrat would possibly outweigh that.

kancheong spiders would make an awfully good band name
tongari
Dec. 11th, 2010 11:46 pm (UTC)
Ooh I will definitely sort out a way to distribute them outstation/overseas after CF to deal with the huge pile of leftovers! (But you should come to CF anyway :DDD) Thank you so much for asking

Ahaha no one would understand what that band was playing

I've seen everything on tumblr but I'll always love your Basara art~~~

I didn't know you have to explain your book content to the printing company DDD: OTL I wish I could buy your lalage book >.< (ocean book is the lalage one right?)
tongari
Dec. 12th, 2010 01:18 am (UTC)
Well I ended up chatting with the owners of the printing shop for a while and they kept thinking the book was for a marine exhibition so I tried to explain xD;

Aww I wish everyone could come to CF :( I'll find a way to distribute the books online afterwards, but it's not the same!

Dec. 10th, 2010 05:44 am (UTC)
Please tell me you're selling that book online! I want to buy it! I want to own something drawn by you so very very much O_O

Dec. 12th, 2010 06:53 am (UTC)
Oh cool, thank you! Looking forward to the sales post, then.

And there doesn't have to be, but are you including any process pictures in the book? =D

That is quite the amazing and accomplished list of events! The Hunting Valley bit sounds so surreal...

Good luck with CF and other drawing things! The art in this post is amazing as always ;w; the happy ossan party picture is truly heartwarming. And I agree that Motochika/Mitsunari is a very sad thing though it seems to be hailed as a beacon of hope more often than not. Though I am more sad for Gyoubu in this situation than Mouri due to various reasons...

Dec. 12th, 2010 01:37 am (UTC)
The 20+ hours flight back was greatly relieved by reading about the exploits of Kashin and Soueki! For which I must thank you, except for the bits that required weeping. There is something about advisor/master relationships that just sets me off

(Btw it only took a while to stop imagining them as dango wearing hats. Also I now have a new batch of historical figures to look up :D)

Pirate/triangle is mostly a beacon of hope for Ieyasu, since everyone else in this situation suffers some form of crushing loss ;;

Dec. 12th, 2010 03:29 am (UTC)
Thank you for reading and the kind words, I am very glad to hear that it was put to good use during a long flight! Alas that the sad parts were numerous. That is something that just seems to happen when I touch anything...any criticisms are welcome. I am also curious which dynamic is being referred to here ;w;

Ehehe what a wonderful image. The poorness of my research might be revealed if you start looking things up. (I have made at least one person generally acknowledged to be abhorrently awful much too nice, and perhaps vice versa.) 8'D

That is a good insight into it. Ieyasu is actually quite lacking in positive interactions in 3, and it's somewhat sad that Motochika is the beacon of hope for him.

Welcome back and all the best with work and art! Don't get too kancheong and stress yourself out :'D

I wish I could make it down to CF just to get my hands on the ocean book, it looks so incredibly gorgeous WHALE SHARKSSS. And all the Basara fanart is lovely no matter how many times I see it. That last one is so beautiful and sad...Poor Aniki/Mitssun/Okra etc. why is this game so full of woe
tongari
Dec. 12th, 2010 08:40 am (UTC)
Thank you! Actually am pretty used to being kancheong about everything by default :D;;; Hope college is treating you kindly, it should now that it is year end and things are slowing down everywhere..

I wish I could keep on top of things enough to attend conventions in Singapore, they always seem really exciting! But CF is nice and cozy from what I remember, you should come up one of these years :D

Well there were happy things involving Tsuru and KG and tearful ossans making friends! but they did get overshadowed by the tragedies. We need one game where Zabii takes over the world to set everything right ;;

I was wondering why Daisuke Igarashi only drew whale sharks for one chapter of Children Of The Sea. Now I understand. SO MANY SPOTS

I will keep you a copy! Am figuring out how to distribute the remaining books overseas after CF :D;

OMG babe what are you and amei and wrats selling >_< I want to book some of all of your stuff *sobs* why oh why am I not going back in time ;-;

I wish I could watch Tumblr with LJ or blogger so I can keep up with your stuff more often >_< Love your Basara stuff as always. I particularly love the last one. There's just a great feel to it <3
tongari
Dec. 12th, 2010 08:53 am (UTC)
Never fear I will hold a copy for you (do you want me to book a copy of amei and wrats' book for you as well? I just saw meimei posting about it in her LJ and I think they'll run out of that book even before this Saturday lolll). We will just have to eat more spectacularly when you are back to make up for you missing CF

Aw I will backup LJ more often then! Tumblr does kind of need work wrt its reply function, but it makes posting images so super easy *_*

Haha thank you <3 Good food is always good! I mentioned to Amei that I'd want one copy of their book already but if you guys can hold it together it would be great <3

haha I'm actually thinking of getting a Tumblr for my more silly stuff as opposed to my blogspot. I'm still in a bit of a dilemma of whether to throw the quirky stuff I do on my blogspot since its something people from school focus on as well XD

Thank you so much dear ;3; LOVE YOUUUUU <3

yes yes yes TRU MAN CREW ♥ ♥ ♥
I spent every cutscene with them thinking to myself Is This Treat Before My Eyes Really Happening? Argg Kanbe's so handsome I can't handle it ♥_♥

Babygawa is too darling with those horns of his, truly as majestic and intimidating as the real deal (not)
MotoMitsu picture so cozy ;; I like how you kept his glove on, makes it more exciting.

PS I'd read anything that involves angry schoolgirl Mitsunari

I WANT TO RIDE PONIES WITH YOU!! Next time I will visit when the weather is double digits in Celcius..

Btw after we left Shedd I was looking at a page where I had drawn a couple of dolphins in the book and I realized how incorrect it was! Dolphins don't stand still! /augh

OHISASHIBURI back at you!

I am sorry that we did not meet up for Thanksgiving, but ALSO GLAD THAT YOU GOT TO HAVE A REAL THANKSGIVING. Shedd Aquarium is fantastic. I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THESE WKW-ESQUE ADVENTURES. Milan! ohmygosh i hope you have so many pictures, and I'm glad you decided to go after all, hahahaha. Hwei how did you pack so much into one post! I love your art always, even though I have never gotten into Basara, like ever. <-- cannot game

~holds you forever~~~~

Cathy!!! I'm so sorry I missed you in Chicago ;_; WILL TRY AGAIN this time with less fail. Shedd was indeed beautiful. The baby beluga was huge! And had lost all of his baby grey from the last time I saw him. And er it was actually a very surreal thanksgiving, I did not know turkeys were so large! Nor that they would smell like industrial chemicals while they were cooking (I think because of the gas oven)

Ahaha post was all booze, book and Basara. Not a lot of variety there

Actually I will not be going to Milan after all, although with luck I will get one of those stovetop espresso makers out of it anyway! But I will have SO MANY PICTURES OF COMIC FIESTA and awesome people and their awesome art, and pork knuckle. If I remember to bring a camera. I should write this down

I am reading about your most recent adventure now and.. ONLY YOUR FANDOMS TURN INTO NIGHTCLUBS WITH FREEFLOW COCKTAILS, CATHY. ONLY YOURS

YES PLEASE SOMETIME, I can't promise to be as much fun as Shedd Aquarium but surely we must think of something?? And also wow, uh, my turkey did not smell like industrial chemicals, i think it was... the gas....

BRING A CAMERA

PORK KNUCKLES!!!

STOVETOP ESPRESSO MAKERS ohmygosih that was just like a list of my most favorite things in the world

I'm just burying my head in my hands going, BUT ALL I WANTED TO DO WAS TO SEE THE MOVIE AGAIN :

Also, how much are you selling that book for? And are you willing to ship to Denver?
tongari
Dec. 13th, 2010 12:58 am (UTC)
Thanks for asking and for the kind words!

I'll sort out international distribution after the convention this weekend, but I'm guessing shipping shouldn't be a problem. I have no idea how to price it though. Will need to consult the amazing and much wiser boothmates over the next week to figure it out..

Gosh it must be super cold in Denver. Wrap up and keep warm!! I found the most urgent need was to keep the backs of my hands/wrists and feet warm, it was so hard getting any work done with cold hands ;;

Glad you had a good trip! Travelling is fun :D

And a book?!? I am definitely interested, if you are making them available online! (one of the main reasons for getting the Heritage book). But have fun at CF! ...I live in Canada, otherwise I would go.

The halloween pic is adorable, the balloons are a cute touch. Also the lighting in the last one is gorgeous.
