sima yi has a message for you

sick most of weekend, spent it re-reading RoT bits and trying to think coherently while not sneezing onto drawing paper. the point of this post is that worldserpent asked what I thought of the bit where Sima Yi cosplays, and having read it thoroughly with the scans, all I can say is (1) I feel so sorry for Guo Jia, (2) this explains why Sima Yi likes putting the HW in disguise and (3) opens up so many possibilitiessss

so did Meng make the Thunder God costume? Somehow it looks more like Sima Yi made it under the subconscious influence of his weird dream.. and Huo has this really nasty ability to share the same dream with others, didn't Zhang Lei also mention the dream about Huo eating bad fish with the HW? btw my initial reaction to the first two or three volumes of RoT was to slash Sima Yi and Huo =_=;; THANKS BOSS CHEN.

the lower left is Sun Ce the star basketball player & Zhou Yu his crafty manager. though actually with the heavy reliance on strategy they're more like American football teams aren't they xD

oh, apparently in Koutetsu Sangokushi Zhao Yun is also a ninja? xD he wears a black face-mask and um, a fur-collared jacket of sorts.

Zhang Liao: didn't like the character in RoT at first (the manhua is full of brash 'I AM (insert name here)' types already, it took a while before he sort of started proving that he was both worthy of that attitude and possessed of much more personality than that. I love that chapter where Luu Buu can't grasp the concept of loyalty -- just as Zhang Liao comes to save him.

Zhang Lei ;________; ONE MUST HOPE

btw the end of vol 26 shows a picture of Straw Man visiting Guo Jia in the rain - I take it Sima Yi will get a chance to wear his favourite 'strange costume' again? xD

cao cao's angel/demon team inspired by comments left in mercurysblood's translations xD godddd I don't know why I like GJ so much. he's such a ruthless bloodthirsty little demonnnn. I suppose because he preaches his cutthroat philosophy so charmingly. and he's sick and passes out here and there but actually rides out and rescues a friend from grevious bodily harm (? lol Jia Xu you are probably the most noble & manly of all the Eight Geniuses but THAT THING ON YOUR HEAD WTF). and he's cute :/

um technical problems but no time to finish ;; it is really surprising how fast you can paint when you lay down the base colours properly first of all.

omgg ok going to bed I feel like a mild case of Guo Jia xD am so glad we have progressed from acupuncture to antibiotics.

; ; all of your sketches are always love.
and the just... relaxed, annoyed, almost frustratedly relaxed (is that called bored? xD;;; ) expression on the last fellow is wonderful.

i hope you get to feeling better soon <333
drink lots of soup :<

Semi incoherency ahoy
♥ ♥

!!!!! OMG! That is so awesome! :D (BTW, did you notice how Guo Jia trades in his wrinkly shirt thing for a nicer outfit later? He gets promoted so he has to dress up or something? XD)

Yeah, that dream is interesting, the one about the bad fish. At first I thought that Huo would be psychologically as indestructible as he was physically, but that whole arc was just painful to read.

The god costume is supposed to be some kind of Rain God. Back then I was looking it up and trying to figure out what kind of god it was, but I didn't understand the Japanese explanation. But yeah, I also felt sorry for Guo Jia in that arc! Getting ganged up on by Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang! And then going out in the rain and collapsing!

Yeah, Jia Xu is perhaps the bravest. That part hasn't been translated yet so I'm not really sure what's going on where Guo Jia rides in on a white horse and rescues him, haha. I think the appeal of Guo Jia is that he has kind of a... selfless inhumanity. He's doing this because he thinks it's right, and ultimately good for the people, at the cost of his own life: clearly all the stress of the battlefield is driving him towards an even earlier grave.

The Zhang Liao thing is interesting: Lu Bu is totally like "loyalty is for chumps!" But Zhang Liao saves his ass, so it's sort of like an unspoken question just how he can be loyal to someone who doesn't value loyalty, and how he squares that. I just also have some kind of thing for Zhang Liao because of those scenes where he just faces down this crowd of people in a corridor (or Huo, who is like a one man army) and doesn't budge), and there's just these great heroic poses he has.

Guo Jia Appreciators unite!
:DDD He looks MUCH better with the new robe, wrinkly shirt thing did not look like it was helping to keep him warm xD; I think it was the scene where Xun Yu comes and tells him and the other advisor he's going to deal with Luu Buu personally? Man, for all that XY is all cold and =_=++ around him, he's actually pretty nice to XY. xD

Is Guo Jia supposed to die at Guandu? ;_; I thought he was still around for a couple more rounds after that. I seem to remember XY going "yes, I was thinking of that too =_=" at him some time. Augh why am I getting attached to a character I know will die tragically. I guess the thing about RoT though is that the way people die is really unpredictable, although you know roughly when and how it should happen. (preparing to cry a river over Sun Ce too)

I habitually get fond of loyal types (even Dian Wei's constant MY LORD IS CALLING made me awww over him at one point) so I find all of Zhang Liao's heroics doubly awesome. The thing is I find his 'No one passes beyond the length of my sword' impossibly cliche but he pulls it off so well lol. Huo does it too but Huo is more like, see how ninja I am! whereareas I get the impression ZL thinks of himself as an extension of Luu Buu's strength.

Augh this manhua inspires pointless rambling. You have spawned a monster xD;

Re: Guo Jia Appreciators unite!
Yeah, it didn't. XD Their relationship is interesting. If you recall the scenes where Guo Jia was still in his school uniform, he and Jia Xu are doing this all for the sake of Xun Yu's virtuous and benevolent rule, but Xun Yu... does not seem to be entirely grateful, understandably. (IIRC he thanks Sima Yi for stopping the monster and his lord's crimes, rt?)

[BTW, Xun Yu also evokes a very T_T reaction in me, because of how he dies. Basically you can also really see it coming here, although it's a long way off. Cao Cao will want to give himself some title or honor, that is a step too close for Xun Yu to usurpation. Therefore, he admonishes him and stays at home, and then Cao Cao sends him an empty box lunch (this is in the novel, I don't know if this really happened historically), and this is a sign, so he drinks poison. ]

Guo Jia dies shortly after, in the campaigns to get rid of Yuan Shao's sons, so in the next round. But yeah, basically he's the one who will die tragically young, and later at Red Cliff Cao Cao will go 'wah, this would never have happened if Guo Jia was still around T_T.' I knooooow. I just hope they'll show lots more Sun Ce before he goes.

Dian Wei I find interesting because he takes it... nearly to the extent of complete insanity. I thought he was hallucinating, honestly. I think reading this manhua has made me like Wei the best. (They're a lot better than they are in DW, ahahaha.) But yeah, ZL is also an assassin, but I see him later becoming older and wiser and being more of a general type.

:D It doeeeees. That's why I'm so happy more people are getting into it, so I have more people to ramble at.

Re: Guo Jia Appreciators unite!
ah, I don't remember that, will have to go back and read it. actually this is fitting in the sense that Guo Jia's illness seems to make him rather more reckless and willing to play the villian (always be afraid of the person with the least to lose?). but XY seems to agree with ZGL that if you want your people to stand upright, you have to stand upright yourself. Although ZGL seems to have no qualms about being mean to a sick person xD

Haha XY doesn't seem to like any strategists at all (I hate to be shallow, but the bitchslapping Sima Yi scene was really so beautifully rendered!! I mean sometimes the proportions are off, but the shading and expressions are almost always superb. have you noticed that Luu Buu's face in particular gets a lot of very detailed closeups T_T <3)

God what a waste >_< it sort of sounds a bit like a chinese serial though, I hope he doesn't do that historically? I guess this means I don't have to worry about Zhang Liao kidnapping him though?

Wei gets a lot of screentime here xD I mean, we are introduced to Cao Cao as head of an army, all dressed up in style and ready to go out conquering, whereareas Liu Bei & Co are like.. these three weirdoes who get lost and turn up at the wrong city. xD

Re: Guo Jia Appreciators unite!
IIRC, it was in volume 10? Yeah. So GJ is essentially playing the villain, not caring about whether he is historically hated or not, in sort of an ends justify the means way. (BTW, if you want more interesting commentary on RoT, check out equivalent_t's journal for some of her stuff). In sort of an interesting way, I think PT might play the same role of Liu Bei (my speculation).

! It was indeed beautifully rendered. :D (I liked the part where XY was like 0_o when Sima Yi showed off his semi-useless Secret Power.) I do like the close ups, even though I'm like... "argh! Lu Bu is going to eat us all!"

I'm actually quite curious about how Xun Yu is going to get away from Zhang Liao.

I think that's because Shu only really starts taking off narratively, if you don't introduce them at the start of their story, when Kongming shows up? Which he will not canonically be doing so for awhile.

As for Guo Jia's disease... I guess I just tend to think it's tuberculosis? [Maybe just because the last dying-tragically-young genius figure I was reading about was Okita Souji. ]

You want that chapter translated soon? ...

btw the end of vol 26 shows a picture of Straw Man visiting Guo Jia in the rain - I take it Sima Yi will get a chance to wear his favourite 'strange costume' again?
Yes it's already shown in one of the most recent chapters.

Nice drawings!
May. 7th, 2007 03:49 pm (UTC)
Eee, if you have time?
May. 7th, 2007 05:30 pm (UTC)
Sorry to butt in on the conversation, but, Merc, thought you might like to know that John okayed my idea we talked about earlier. :D

Sorry that was so random, but it made me happieeeeee!
May. 7th, 2007 09:58 pm (UTC)
Hey cool! But you'll be so busyyyyyyyyyyy... XP
May. 7th, 2007 10:11 pm (UTC)
Yes, but this is the good sort of busy. Besides, what else am I going to do while I wait for John to scan the next chapter?

Maybe I'll browbeat my friends list into helping me. Fufufufu!

Considering your above comment, you're going to laugh when you get my next email. XD
May. 8th, 2007 04:30 am (UTC)
ahh thanks for the heads up, found it!

(I didn't know the 'ma de' expression originated so early lol, it's like hearing modern swear words in Shakespeare xD)
May. 8th, 2007 11:03 am (UTC)
It's not historically accurate! XD Not to mention it's full of HK native slang.
May. 6th, 2007 04:51 pm (UTC)
So much eye candy, my mouth is watering. Hellos, by the way, I've friended you because I'm fascinated.
May. 7th, 2007 05:06 am (UTC)
oh man, the best thing is they are all historical figures xD

and hi :3 you have a lovely gackt icon!
May. 7th, 2007 12:27 pm (UTC)
I enjoy the expressiveness in your characters, and the fact that each one looks distinct. I can't take credit for Gackt, sadly!
May. 6th, 2007 06:26 pm (UTC)
Aah your sketches are so lively and have such a great feel to them. The stuff you can do on computer always amazes me. 83

Thank you for adding me I wasn't expecting it. ^o^; I'm a fan of your hero comic. X3
May. 7th, 2007 05:19 am (UTC)
hi, glad you liked them! part of my insidious campaign to get more people to read Ravages of Time >3

... ahaha that reminds me it is time to update that xD;
May. 6th, 2007 08:15 pm (UTC)
Yay! Guo Jia!

I'm glad I'm not the only GJ fangirl anymore. :D

Guo Jia = Best Genius EVAR!
May. 7th, 2007 04:37 am (UTC)
including charmian that makes three! xD

another reason to thank Chen Mou, I don't think I ever paid much attention to him in Ro3K ;3;
May. 7th, 2007 05:34 pm (UTC)
Eh? I thought Charmian was more of a Xun Yu fangirl.

Doesn't matter. GJ needs all the appreciation he can get to counteract all the negative waves he's getting from Xiahou Dun and the like.

Your pictures are all kind of awesome, by the way. I was too excited about the Guo Jia-ness earlier - must've forgotten to mention it. Anyway, your drawings = awesome + GJ = more awesome!!!
May. 8th, 2007 03:31 am (UTC)
XHD seems to warm up to him though? It was touching how he was like GO SAVE THE ADVISOR. Guo Jia needs to work on his people skills though, all the other generals still want to beat him up regularly. xD

Charmian seems to be ok with me babbling about GJ at her so far? xD

Haha s'ok, glad you liked! Am starting to think I need to pick up even simplified chinese again so I can scour the intarweb for more RoT fanstuffs xD
May. 8th, 2007 03:41 am (UTC)
I think he's fakin' it. :P XHD doesn't like anyone.

Except maybe his homey Cao Cao (and Xiahou Yuan too).

That's because she has very good taste. ^_^

I have a few fanart sites bookmarked. I found this one who's art made me nearly pass out in delight (it was in my favorite style), it was so gorgeous, but it's offline now. Makes me glad I saved all the Three Kingdom art (she does Dynasty Warriors stuff too) there to my harddrive for oggling later.

A different fanartist did one of Jia Xu and Ma Chao (with Guo Jia as the peeping tom) in the style of shunga. XD I'm no fan of yaoi, but I still love her stuff.
May. 8th, 2007 04:39 am (UTC)
Hey! Who says I can't like them both!?

I guess I just feel the need to stick up for Xun Yu because he seems to have fewer fangirls. XD
May. 6th, 2007 09:49 pm (UTC)
wow, gorgeous! Love the folds on the jacket..whatever it's called. ^_^; OCE file?
May. 7th, 2007 05:22 am (UTC)
I think it has just been christened 'Successor of the Wrinkly Shirt Thing' xD

ahh sorry, this was all photoshop, and I tend to save OC files as psd because I usually open them in photoshop for colour adjustments later :/
May. 7th, 2007 12:25 am (UTC)
you = genius, even if i have no idea who these people are.
May. 7th, 2007 05:24 am (UTC)
nicheeee I wish I could get you to read this :/ it is like, the history of ancient china in comic book format with lots of attacking grain supplies and sneaky strategist battles as well as physical fights with gradually upgraded opponents! :D?
May. 7th, 2007 07:17 am (UTC)
;_; is this...a video game based comic?
May. 7th, 2007 07:46 am (UTC)
in the sense that Dynasty Warriors was based off 三国演义, yes!

wikipedia summary and english fan scanslations, though it is probably much better in its original Chinese ;;
May. 7th, 2007 01:03 pm (UTC)

You make me so happy, hwei. T.T

I <3 Guo Jia too <333333  Though if he collapses again without dying I will laugh and laugh (and then be very anxious watching out for the next incident). ._.

May. 8th, 2007 02:52 am (UTC)
I like how he always falls backwards expecting people to catch him. I wonder what exactly he is sick with though, and why it can apparently be remedied by being stuck full of needles?? Maybe he shouldn't hang out with crows all the time xD
May. 9th, 2007 08:35 am (UTC)

(I wish I could say he has Guillain-Barre, but making that a workable joke would take too much effort. and brains. orz)

May. 12th, 2007 02:24 pm (UTC)
Guo Jia! He looks so pretty! *_* I love the sketch of him sitting at his desk in contemplation as well.
